Buying a skin versus opening a case

This comparison is about CS2 weapon cases with random drops. Terminals and third-party platforms follow different rules.

Buying a skin

You choose the weapon, finish and specific item, including its exterior, float, pattern and stickers. You can inspect it and check the final price before paying.

Opening a case

You receive a random item from the case contents. You cannot choose the skin or its attributes in advance. First check that the item you want is among the possible drops.

Before buying, inspect the specific skin: two items with the same name may look different.

Which costs should you compare?

For a standard weapon case, count both the case and its key. Every additional opening costs extra. When buying a skin, check the final amount due, including any fees added at checkout.

Can opening a case get you the skin for less?

A lucky drop is possible, but you cannot know in advance how much you will spend or whether you will get the skin you want. When comparing several openings with a purchase, add up the cost of every attempt.

Should you open or sell a case from a drop?

A dropped case costs you nothing to acquire, but you still need a key for its standard opening. Once opened, that case can no longer be sold.

Selling the case adds a known amount after fees towards the skin you want. Opening means spending on a key for a random result.

A sale on the Steam Community Market adds funds to your Steam Wallet. You can use them there to buy your chosen item, but cannot withdraw them to a bank account.

How many cases does it take to get a knife?

No number of case openings guarantees a knife. Unsuccessful attempts do not mean the next case must contain a rare item. Even receiving a knife does not guarantee the model, finish or exterior you want.

If you enjoy the opening itself, decide in advance how much you are willing to spend without receiving your target item. Do not increase that amount to try to recover what you have spent.
