How to buy a CS2 skin on the Steam Community Market

  1. Sign in to the correct Steam account and open the Community Market. Choose “Market” from the “Community” menu. The skin will be bought for this account. Check your available Wallet balance.
  2. Find the Counter-Strike 2 item. Check its full name, including the weapon, finish, exterior condition and any StatTrak or Souvenir designation you want.
  3. Choose and inspect an individual listing. A listing is a seller's offer for an item. Where individual listings are available, compare the items and their prices. Use our guide to inspecting a skin before buying to check wear, pattern and stickers.
  4. Click “Buy now” for your chosen listing. In the confirmation window, check the item, quantity and total charge in your Wallet currency. If that listing has sold, inspect another item before buying it.
  5. Confirm the purchase and check the result. Look at your Market transaction history and the Counter-Strike 2 inventory on that Steam account. If the outcome is unclear, check the transaction records before trying to buy again.

If the page offers only a buy order rather than individual listings, read the explanation below before placing one.

Which skin details should you check before paying?

Start with the full item name. Matching weapons and finishes do not necessarily mean you are comparing the same version. The exterior condition and the presence or absence of StatTrak or Souvenir must also match what you want.

Then check the individual item:

  • Float: the numerical wear value. Values can differ within the same exterior category.
  • Pattern: how the finish's design is positioned on that item. Some finishes show noticeable differences.
  • Stickers: which stickers are applied and how they look.

Two skins with the same name and exterior can look different. The lowest price on the page may belong to another item, rather than the one you inspected. Compare the price with the details of the listing you actually intend to buy.

If you are still deciding between buying a skin and opening cases, read our comparison of buying skins and opening cases.

Buying a listing or placing a buy order: what changes?

What mattersBuying a selected listingPlacing a buy order, where available
How the item is selectedYou choose an individual seller's offerSteam matches a suitable offer automatically
How the price is setYou check the total for that purchaseYou set a maximum price; if the order fills at a lower price, you pay less
Whether you get the item you inspectedYes, if you buy that exact listing while it is still availableThe order does not guarantee a particular float, pattern or set of stickers

For interchangeable items that are all identical, Steam uses buy orders instead of individual listings. If a buy order is available for your chosen skin, keep the same limitation in mind: it does not reserve the item you inspected.

An order may fill immediately or remain active until a suitable offer appears. You can view and cancel unfilled orders on the Community Market home page.

Check the quantity when placing an order: if you want one skin, order one item. Before buying manually, check whether you already have an active order for it. If you want just one skin, cancel an unwanted order first: it can fill independently of your manual purchase, leaving you with two items.

How to check the total price and your available balance

Compare your available Wallet funds with the total charge in the confirmation window. The buyer's fee is shown before purchase. If the form already gives a total including fees, do not add a fee percentage again.

Hypothetical example: your available balance is US$17.50 and the purchase total is US$20.00. You are US$2.50 short: US$20.00 − US$17.50 = US$2.50. These are example amounts, not a live skin price. Use the actual Steam amounts in the same currency for your purchase.

Once you sign in, prices are displayed in your Wallet currency. A dollar price in someone else's screenshot cannot be compared directly with a balance in another currency.

If you plan to sell another skin first, use the amount you will receive after fees. Do not count expected proceeds as available funds until the sale is complete and the money is available.

What to check if the purchase fails or the skin is missing

SituationWhat to check
Steam reports a Market restrictionRead the reason and any end date in Steam's message. Check the Community Market access requirements: a positive balance alone does not remove a restriction
You do not have enough fundsCompare the available balance with the full charge in the same currency
Your chosen listing is no longer availableReturn to the offers and inspect another item before paying
A buy order has disappearedCheck transaction history and your balance. It may have filled or been cancelled by the system, including because of balance issues or account changes
You confirmed a purchase but cannot see the skinCheck the account, transaction history and Counter-Strike 2 inventory in Steam. Checking only the open game is not enough to confirm the purchase

Transaction history is available on the Community Market home page and in your Steam account details. A receipt is also sent by email. Check these records before purchasing again so you do not accidentally buy a second skin.
