In brief

Float is the numeric wear value of a skin. Lower values mean less wear within that finish, but two different finishes can look very different at the same float. Check the finish’s allowed range, then inspect the individual copy.

Five wear grades

Five wear grades
WearFloat
Factory New (FN)0 ≤ float < 0.07
Minimal Wear (MW)0.07 ≤ float < 0.15
Field-Tested (FT)0.15 ≤ float < 0.38
Well-Worn (WW)0.38 ≤ float < 0.45
Battle-Scarred (BS)0.45 ≤ float ≤ 1

Read the full value near a boundary: 0.1499 and 0.1501 belong to different grades even if a short display rounds both to 0.15. The table uses lower-inclusive, upper-exclusive intervals; 1.00 belongs to Battle-Scarred.

What wear actually changes

Compare the three enlarged areas on the rifle: the exposed surface changes even where the artwork stays in place. On the pistols, larger dark areas change the overall impression. Wear depends on the finish’s material and masking; it is not a uniform transparency slider. Judge current CS2 appearance in the game, with matching angle and lighting.

Why some finishes have no Factory New version

The finish’s allowed interval can be narrower than 0–1. AK-47 Redline starts at 0.10, so Factory New does not exist for it. AWP Asiimov starts at 0.18, excluding both Factory New and Minimal Wear. AWP Graphite stops at 0.12, leaving only Factory New and Minimal Wear. These are finish limits, not the smallest and largest floats in our player sample.

AWP | Asiimov0.18 – 1

Two recorded copies, one wear grade

The recorded Glock-18 Fade copies below both fall in Factory New. Their numeric wear differs, and their paint seeds differ too. This makes them useful for reading the data, but not a controlled experiment isolating wear. Use the item links to inspect each copy; the scale compares numbers, not simulated scratches.

Float, pattern and price

Float describes wear; paint seed controls pattern variation. Stickers are another separate layer. Playing matches does not gradually raise the skin’s float. A low number alone does not establish a fair price: compare the same finish, wear and variant, then inspect the exact item.
