How to start a CS2 file verification

  1. Close CS2, restart your computer and launch Steam.
  2. Right-click Counter-Strike 2 in your Library. You can also open its Library page and click the gear icon.
  3. Select Properties and open Installed Files.
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the final message.
  5. If Steam schedules a download, let it finish. Then launch CS2 and repeat the action that triggered the problem.

Steam says verification can take several minutes; it does not set a fixed completion time. Do not verify several games at once or run demanding tasks, such as a full antivirus scan, alongside verification.

What to do after verification: four possible results

If the game launches but one skin will not open in the inspection viewer, start with our troubleshooting steps for inspecting a specific item. This helps separate a listing problem from a failure in CS2 itself.

Should you delete files that failed to validate?

Do not delete the game folder solely because of this warning. Steam explains that, for most games, it can refer to local configuration files that should not be replaced during verification.

That explanation does not cover every error. If Steam cannot write data to disk or finish downloading, investigate that specific error. The number of unvalidated files alone does not explain why CS2 crashed.

CS2 file verification is stuck at 0%: where to start

First check which process has stopped progressing: verification in the game's properties or a Steam download. The same percentage on screen does not establish the same cause.

Close CS2 and other games, finish any other game verifications, then restart Steam and your computer. Run the CS2 verification on its own. If the client displays an error, save its text instead of repeatedly starting another check.

If the download is stalled, check Steam's message and the free space on the drive containing CS2. For persistent download problems, Steam recommends clearing the download cache in the Downloads section of its settings. You will need to sign in again afterwards, so make sure you can access your account and its sign-in verification method first. Clearing this cache keeps installed games.

A 0% indicator alone does not reveal the exact cause or a guaranteed fix. If the problem returns after a restart, investigate Steam's message rather than repeating verification indefinitely.

Will file verification restore your previous CS2 settings?

If importing someone else's cfg changed your settings, restore the previous values separately. A cfg is a text file containing game commands; checking installed files is not a substitute for undoing imported commands.

Follow our instructions for restoring your CS2 settings. Before editing manually, save copies of the configuration files you plan to change. Avoid deleting all settings files to test a single possibility.

Verification finished, but CS2 still crashes

Check for updates to the game, operating system and graphics driver. Steam also recommends checking system requirements and possible conflicts with background programs. Successful file verification does not rule out those causes.

Do not start by uninstalling Steam: uninstalling the client also removes installed game content. If you need support, prepare the full error message, your system and graphics card details, when the problem occurs and the verification result. This records what you have already checked and where the failure happens.
